Do you care if they have official positions? I've noticed that some groups are going to the no positions route, except for the leader position. What do you think of it? :hmmm:

I dislike it personally...I feel like it makes it so companies can ignore what the group members are actually good at in favor of who fans love the most and so on and so forth. I will say the only plus for me is that hopefully this means no more "visual" position.

Dont like it because personally it's almost like anyone can debut despite lack of skills and be called an 'all-rounder group' which some arent, it's almost like a curtain to the group :sanapray:
Visuals seem to matter now

Oh shit, I also agree with this point-I didn't EVEN think of that but it would explain why so many idols debuting nowadays aren't that uh well....yeah...

That's something that I've noticed, then that's how one idol can be easily criticized, yet something that I've noticed in the 2nd Gen is that even the idols who debuted weren't all visuals but still had talent :susPepe:

I prefer when they all have their own positions personally.

idc either way

one thing that's good about no positions tho is that it won't lock idols into a specific role. there are plenty of idols who debuted in one position and, over time, became much better singers or rappers and kind of flipped over. keeps it fluid imo

plus I've never really liked the whole sub/lead/main aspect of the roles. feels almost demeaning sometimes to tell someone they're a vocalist but only a sub-vocalist, ya know?

i don't really care, but i do think that some positions do end up getting somewhat established, or at least universally acknowledged by the fanbase. like most ppl familiar with txt would agree that yeonjun's the best dancer and rapper, kai and taehyun are the better singers, etc etc

also plenty of groups do give positions like rapper, vocalist, dancer, etc, but don't define main or lead. nine.i come to mind as an example. also svt's hip-hop unit (s.coups, wonwoo, mingyu, and vernon) have confirmed that no one's the main or the lead rapper - all 4 of them rap. this doesn't apply to their other positions, though - dk and seungkwan are main vocals, hoshi and dino are main dancers, etc

hard agree on both takes.
many groups have great vocalists that are 'locked' into the sub-vocalist role because the group has strong main/lead vocalists. since there's usually only 1-2 members for main and lead vocal respectively, in larger groups everyone who's not a rapper ends up as a sub-vocal and it's kinda... not representative of their skill at all?
this is especially an issue in older groups who over time have become all-rounders. it's possible that all of them are good enough to debut as a main vocalists or main dancers nowadays, but because positions are relative to the group itself, they usually just get stuck with whatever they got when they debuted.

it can be useful for newer groups though, giving each member a clear target on which skills they should focus on honing first as well as giving the audience direction on which skills to take notice for which member.

overall, it's good at the start but annoying later, and honestly idk what i prefer.

I don’t really mind
It’s not that groups who have official positions are more talented
Just because, for example, a company gives an Idol a main vocal position doesn’t mean they are a good vocalist
