Burning Sun

What: A night club in Gangnam district of Seoul
Operation: February 2018 - February 2019

Citizen Mr. Kim (Kim Sang Kyo) & Burning Sun Assault

NAVER Article| Soompi Article

- Kim Sang Kyo submits a petition to The Blue House wherein he reveals the entire story regarding the assaults below (which is what became the catalyst for this entire investigation)
- He claims he was the victim of police brutality and assault from employees after being arrested at Burning Sun in November 2018; Kim Sang Kyo was arrested from the club after employees claim he was sexually assaulting a woman inside of the club.
- Kim Sang Kyo claims in a post he made online that a woman that was being sexually harassed grabbed his shoulder and hid behind him; after asking for help from BS guards, Kim Sang Kyo claims that he was then beaten up by said guards, as well as what seemed like "friends" of the guards
- Kim Sang Kyo claims that after being beaten up both inside and outside of the club, he was arrested in cuffs and taken to the police station where he endured further abuse at the hands of officers
- Mr. Jang (BS Club Director) grabs Kim Sang Kyo by the hair, hits him in the face, drags him into the road and continues to assault him
(CCTV)

In a document explaining the reasons for Mr. Kim’s arrest, Mr. Kim was written as the assailant and Mr. Jang was written as the victim. When “News Desk” reached out to the club and police to hear their thoughts, a source from the club stated that Mr. Kim was charged for sexual harassment, while the police stated that Mr. Kim was arrested for obstruction of business. In addition, the police said that they are investigating both assaults, including the allegations of Mr. Kim’s sexual harassment inside the club.
- CEO Mr. Jang sues Kim Sang Kyo for defamation of character and releases an apology statement on
Burning Sun's official Instagram

[Police Statement]
At the time of our arrival, Mr. Kim was overly emotional and refused to reveal his personal information. We were attempting to verify the report that he had assaulted the security guards and caused a disturbance, but Mr. Kim continued to cause a commotion, which is why he was arrested for business obstruction, among other reasons. We have secured evidence such as CCTV footage of the surrounding areas and are currently in the process of looking into them. We have also called Mr. Jang in for an investigation. Several cases are being investigated simultaneously, including the statement from a representative of the club and their counter charge against Mr. Kim.
Mr. Kim is currently refusing to come in for an investigation.
- Kim Sang Kyo was summoned to court in regards to Mr. Jang's accusation against Kim Sang Kyu for defamation
- Speculation: Kim Sang Kyo admits on radio show to prior sexual assault cases against him/abusing women (
interview that many claim shows this is a false rumor spread)
- Speculation: Kim Sang Kyo was
clearly beaten on CCTV and wasn't beating workers at BS
- Speculation: Kim Sang Kyo was
assaulted by police officers while being taken into custody as well as at the station after the fact; the police tried to clean and cover it up [MBC 1 | MBC 2]
- Instiz
releases outside CCTV of Burning Sun during supposed assault of Kim Sang Kyo by guards and police

[The Women of Burning Sun Assault]
- Speculation: Kim Sang Kyo was accused of sexually assaulting and "stalking" three women inside of BS; these women later have been seen as not credible due to their close connections with Seungri and staff, and it appears that the CCTV footage shows him nowhere near any of the three women for most of the time he's there

- Speculation: The three women involved in the apparent sexual assault via Kim Sang Kyo in BS:
Aena/Anna (Club employee and promoter; currently being investigated as a drug dealer)
Second Woman (acquaintance of BS CEO)
Third Woman (acquaintance of BS employee)
-
Aena/Anna also uploaded a video partying with Seungri
- Aena/Anna under investigation for drug distribution

[Seungri's Response]
"I do not know the person in the photograph personally. The photos I take with my fans usually ends up somewhere in the internet and social media. Many people in the club have often come up to me and asked to take a picture together. And I’m usually not hesitant to grant them the opportunity."
- Accusation: Burning Sun provided date rape drugs (among other drugs) for rich clientele
- Burning Sun and Naver have removed the CCTV videos. If unavailable at any of the above links,
click here to see what remains of clips.

In an interview with YTN Star from November 2018, Seungri referred to his club; 'We have 100 CCTVs in our club, and there is sex education during our club staff training. I think that we should do well in preserving the right party culture for clubs. I wish I can contribute to the culture of the club.'
- Burning Sun employee seen assaulting Kim Sang Kyo fired
- Speculation: Kim Sang Kyo proven innocent in assault case

Burning Sun: Woman Drugged & Dragged
Police Admitting to Violence at Burning Sun

- A video uploaded late December of 2018 shows a scene at Burning Sun of a club guard dragging a woman.
- Speculation: woman was dragged to a VIP room after being drugged.
- She went to the police to report a sexual assault in this instance and was ignored
- Police deleted the original CCTV of the incident; the video that was uploaded was taken via an employee of BS, and passed around
- Burning Sun also uploads information regarding submission of multiple CCTV to the police, as well as the Thai woman's reasons for being removed from the club (stole a drink in the VIP section, refused to leave, attacked staff); this post has since been deleted from Instagram
- Thai woman said to be drugged and dragged by club employees
uploads an apology in regards to her behavior in Burning Sun
- Speculation: Thai woman
actually taken outside and watched by female guards of BS, behaving calmly

- Speculation: Burning Sun paid police a large sum of money to not be investigated and keep things quiet
- Charges were filed for the above speculation/accusation in regards to Burning Sun and police bribery
- Seungri's name comes up, at this time, only as "Seungri's Club" in articles, and due to his multiple mentions of the club in the past
- Kim Sang Kyo was the person that spread the information that the police are paid a large sum by BS to keep things quiet as well as that he hears these types of events (sexual assaults and the like) happen sometimes up to twice a day at the club

I've heard there are sometimes spy cameras in the bathrooms, which is just creepy...

Burning Sun: Their Statement
Soompi Article

- Burning Sun issues statements in regards to the reports and rumors arising from the video spreading and the police charges being filed.
- CEO Lee Seung Hyun and Lee Moon Ho signed the statement/apology that was released on January 29; MBC News at 8pm reported the incident the prior night

We understand that much doubt and controversy has arisen in relation to the Gangnam assault incident reported on MBC News at 8 p.m. on January 28, 2019. The incident occurred in the process of a staff member responding to a civil complaint from a female guest who said that she had been the victim of sexual harassment. We express our sincere apology and remorse as the representatives of the club’s management team for arousing criticism over assault by a club staff member.
We will fully cooperate in the investigation process as necessary to allow for the thorough investigation of the truth related to the various doubts brought up in that report, including submitting all of the CCTV footage that recorded the details related to that incident to the investigative agency.

Also, regarding the person from the club connected to that assault incident, we are holding him responsible and have taken disciplinary action and dismissal measures. We will do our best to prevent this from happening again in the future through actions such as education for our club staff and the creation of manuals on safety and security.
- Mr. Kim was the main source of the woman being dragged through the club's CCTV video footage being uploaded online

Less than 10 days after my incident occurred on November 24, a woman who was intoxicated by something was dragged by her hair by a Burning Sun guard down a VIP hall. The woman grabbed on to the computer and desk and seemed to be in need of help, but the staff ignored that. I received information that the woman reported this to the police, but the police let it pass and Burning Sun deleted the CCTV [footage].
- Burning Sun also uploaded a statement in regards to the video with the woman being dragged and allegedly being taken to a VIP room after being drugged

This is our explanation statement regarding the video in question.
There are additional videos from the same day as when she was dragged out. On December 1, 2018 around 1:35 a.m., an intoxicated woman (Thai) at a VIP table was causing a disturbance through actions such as unsealing alcohol at the table and secretly drinking it, and so actions were taken for her to leave.
In the process of her leaving, she committed the first act of assault on the guard’s head.
After our Burning Sun guard team called the police, they were waiting and a female Burning Sun guard was in charge.
A staff member who was able to communicate with the foreigner (the male wearing a denim jacket) explained the situation in English but she became angry instead and she assaulted the female guard and sales team member.
After the police arrived, we submitted the video in question to the police, the foreign guest was arrested,
we received assault settlement money afterwards for the repair cost of the laptop, and the case was closed.

Burning Sun Continued

- CEO Lee Moon Ho makes his social media account private before deactivating it; stops answering phone calls and voicemails
- Two additional women come forward to MBC and claim they were drugged and raped in Burning Sun, one by an employee and the other by a customer
- Dispatch reveals contents of messages between ex-employees of Burning Sun; later revealed to be "MDs" (not considered full time employees because they do not work directly for the club); speculation: contents of chats include the drugging of or intoxication of women and their sexual activities with said women
- CEO Lee Moon Ho releases statement that there actually was violence used against Kim Sang Kyo and that as a result, Mr. Jang resigned from his position; denies all other allegations, and states that Burning Sun will be implementing new policies (removing guards with prior criminal history, installing CCTV in blind spots, creating a voicemail for the club to receive customer complaints)
-
Clarification of CEO Lee's statement - Mr. Jang did not resign but was in fact fired, Lee deactivated his account at the time to focus on the "real matters" instead of social media; states that CCTV was all submitted to police and full cooperation from Burning Sun will be given
- Speculation: MD Jisung (someone suspected of having ties with Kim Sang Kyo in attempts to ruin Burning Sun)
suspected of creating a fake website for Burning Sun, listing Seungri as owner and operator
-
CEO Lee Moon Ho speaks with KBS and threatens to sue anyone that spreads malicious rumors or false information in conjunction with the case/scandal; sues former employee, a female guest that lied, Kim Sang Kyo, and over 100 online users for malicious comments
-
Police confirm money being given to police official "Kang" from Burning Sun to dismiss investigations into club supposedly allowing minors to enter establishment; currently investigating money transfers

Seoul police on Monday interrogated a co-head of a nightclub under investigation over allegations of narcotics use, sexual assaults, violence and corrupt ties with district police. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has called in the co-head of Burning Sun, identified by his surname, Lee (Lee Moon Ho), for questioning, it said. Lee is suspected of bribing former and incumbent police officers, including a retired officer surnamed Kang, for overlooking illegalities at the club in the posh Gangnam district, such as drug use, permitting entrance, and selling alcohol, to minors.
Lee turns out to be a former registered board member of a company that operates the Le Meridien Seoul hotel, inside which Burning Sun is located. Police have been investigating the nightclub over alleged selling and use of drugs. One employee has been detained and a Chinese woman is facing drug charges. The allegations have come under media spotlight since Seungri, a member of the boy band BIG BANG, worked as the club’s public relations director. He has apologized over the scandal.
Police have found out that the retired police officer Kang, who now runs a cosmetics firm, had a large promotional event at Burning Sun in July last year. The event took place in the midst of a police investigation over the alleged entry of a minor into the club and Kang is accused of helping the club owner get away with the infraction.
The Gangnam Police Station closed the case in August, citing a lack of evidence.
- CEO Lee Moon Ho investigated on bribery of police officials
- Verified that Burning Sun was established by Lee Moon Ho and Lee Sung Hyun (not Seungri)

Club Arena

- CEO Lee Moon Ho was originally working at Club Arena before leaving to create and open Burning Sun; became close friends with Seungri after Seungri was a VIP guest at Club Arena
- Police bribery suspicions follow Lee Moon Ho to Burning Sun (suspected that police were bribed at Club Arena as well to keep quiet about the going ons involving possible drug distribution and other crimes)
- Club Arena's CEO under investigation involving police bribery and tax evasion (on a large scale)

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

YG Entertainment

- Naver is one of YG Entertainment's investors
- Naver articles regarding the CCTV of Burning Sun start to be deleted from their site, thus many spread rumors of YG Entertainment's involvement with Burning Sun scandal
- Yang Hyun Suk
gives statement in regards to Seungri's involvement and relation to Burning Sun

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Seungri
- KBS reports that Seungri resigned a week prior to the Burning Sun assault investigations and release of information/start of the scandal as preparation for his military service and not because of the current scandal involving the club
- Seungri's mother resigned from her position as Burning Sun's auditor at the same time Seungri resigned from his position with the club
- Mr. Jang states that Seungri was not in charge of the club, nor was he at the club on the date of the assault (Kim Sang Kyo's assault)
- Seungri is not a CEO or owner of the club, according to the financial reports, but rather a member of the board of investors and a publicist for Burning Sun

- Speculation: Seungri said to release an apology statement but is blocked by his attorney
- Rumor: Seungri involved in sex trafficking - rumor spread through online social media (international fans/sources)
-
Seungri remains silent on Burning Sun scandal
- Seungri spotted with Hyoyeon in Instagram photo on day of alleged assault
- Knetizens furious after Burning Sun reveals that Seungri is not the owner or involved in management of the club, simply an investor; mention his appearance on show "I Live Alone" and speaking of his "new club opening soon" and how he wasn't like other artists in Kpop that simply represented/were the face of the club, but rather he was directly involved within the club's operations

According to reports, Seungri was very well aware of the 'Burning Sun' assault. KBS quoted a former employee at the club who said, "Seungri found out about the controversy surrounding the club and then quit his job as director." The whole staff at the club said, "When he quit, there was a concert in the Philippines so he had to come back to Korea. As soon as he arrived he inquired about the media coverage on the situation." According to reports, it was about 2 weeks before MBC reported the allegations on the 28th. Seungri had resigned as the in-house director of Burning Sun 4 days before the MBC report. The mother, Kangmo, who was in charge of the club's audit, also left.
Seungri was also aware of the situation when he attended the "2018 Best Brand Award Korea Consumer Evaluation" that was held at The Plaza Hotel in Jung-gu Seoul on the 29th as a representative of Aori F&B. Meanwhile, The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 30th that they're conducting an investigation into Burning Sun and have appointed a special investigative team to look into the allegations of drugs and assault.
- Fans begin to turn their backs on Seungri for his lack of response in the Burning Sun case and displayed lack of responsibility; fan page MoonlightsR_ shuts down claiming that there was "no way he [Seungri] didn't know" and that he has mentioned multiple times that he runs the club but then does not make a statement after the fact
- Seungri tested for drugs -
results negative
- Seungri revealed to be in the club until 3am on the day of the assault; the assault occurred at 6am
-
Seungri releases statement on his Instagram
- Seungri is close friends with Burning Sun CEO Lee Moon Ho and former director Mr. Jang
- CEO Lee Moon Ho
uploads statement regarding Seungri's lack of involvement as a management member, but rather as a consultant for the club as well as a promotional figure and someone that arranges contracts with DJs overseas
- Lawyer states that Seungri has no legal responsibility to Burning Sun
-
Photo of Seungri taken with woman (Anna/Aena; see above section "Women of Burning Sun Assault") accused prior of drug distribution (and was a promoter and club employee) surfaces; Seungri denies knowing who she is, Anna replies that Seungri didn't know her personally
- Police
reveal consideration to begin investigation of Seungri
- Seungri
apologizes to fans at concert in regards to Burning Sun scandal

- Seungri accused of
providing prostitutes to rich clients of Burning Sun; chat members included Seungri, Mr. Kim (an employee with BS) and Mr. Yu (from Yuri Holdings)
- SBS funE released chatroom information;

- Side Note: Seungri became
wrapped up in a sex scandal with a Japanese woman in 2012; the following week he was wrapped up in another with a Japanese co-star. He took a year hiatus to reflect.

Yuri Holdings

- Yuri Holdings was established by Seungri and "Yu Mo"
- Seungri leaves his position with Yuri Holdings in January due to impending military enlistment
- Yuri Holdings
clarifies in interview that they are not the owners of Burning Sun, but are investors with 20% share interest in Burning Sun Entertainment Inc and help with marketing and public recognition

uhhhh, lots more coming x.x but for now i will just post this so that i can come back to it later (work is calling at the moment ;-;)

i really like your title with the KPOP's scandal part. i know people are saying its a crime and not related to kpop but up until now it did cover idol and it could be considered a scandal. now that all the celebs are out of the way, the bigger ones can be uncovered. it is kpop's scandal but korea's crime.

Though Seungri has been exposed for the prostitution ring, we still don't know what went down with the whole Burning Sun thing. Thank you for compiling this.

No problem! I will be adding all of that info as well - the people in the ring, the overseas gambling, the idols that were involved with the hidden cams etc

True!
It's actually considered both, really, if you look at it. Yes, there were crimes committed by both celebrities and Korean citizens/officials etc, but, the entirety of it is a scandal - it's scandalous, "an action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing general public outrage."
So calling the illegal crimes both a crime and a scandal would be correct ;)

I love how you wrote "it is kpop's scandal but korea's crime" - that's some serious tag line material if I ever saw it!

Okay. Read through it.
Faith in humanity: lost
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I will be adding more, brace yourself!
Luckily a lot of what I will be adding will be the apprehension of the dirt bags involved in this (some of them anyway) and the stripping of any dignity through their own doing.

This scandal has definitely made me see Kpop in a new light. I mean I knew the industry was dark and slimy but never in my wildest dreams would I have imagine it going up to this extent. People are honestly crazy. I don't know what the fuck runs through the minds of this friend gang but they seriously need to be locked up for good.

I'm just glad (even though it can be a hard pill for us and many to swallow) that their asses were exposed and there's something being done about it. Even if at this point the corruption gives them a slap on the wrist and a "don't do that young man!" we know their reputation is in the garbage like their minds have apparently always been.

This entire "saga" is insane. Thanks for compiling all of this information in one place. It makes it easier to keep up with and easier for me to look back on credible sources and not get tangled up in some fandom BS.

It's too so much :yolk:

I'm glad it's benefiting someone! It's an awkward amount of back and forth work ;A; most of the information is coming from Soompi, since it's one of the more reliable sources for international translations of Korean articles, but there will be others as well in there (making sure to take, as best as possible, from credible sources).

There's just SO MUCH to update and put in order..it's....incredibly overwhelming. Who knows how long it's going to take to properly update it all x.x I might end up putting the timeline as the main chunk of info, depending on how I implement it and such.

ALSO I will definitely do my best to try to clean all of the information I've been posting/relaying up and update it to the fullest ASAP. Trying trying trying x.x
