Hong Kong protests have been ongoing issue, with them going on several months now and many opinions being voiced against China's actions outside of Hong Kong as well. However China has started to use it's economical power to silence companies around the world.

NBA: "How much of its integrity -- and legacy -- is the National Basketball Association willing to sacrifice for the sake of business? The answer, apparently, is: lots."
NBA's response to China backlash at odds with league's history

Team manager of one of the NBA's teams made a tweet about standing with Hong Kong protesters. This led to quick outrage in China including many businesses cutting ties with the team, but it didn't stay only there- it was announced that broadcast companies in China cut ties with NBA due to tweet of one team manager and won't be showing NBA's preseason games. This despite said team manager deleting the tweet and makign backpedaling apology as wella s NBA and some players stating how much they love China and that this was opinion of one person. Article points out how this goes against NBA's values as it has branded itself as League That Encourages Political Activism.

Blizzard: "Keep China happy, at all costs"
Blizzard failed to make a stand for anything but China and money

Blizzard is in middle of controversy after punishing professional Heartstone player- taking away price money he won as well as banning him from playing on tournaments for a year, because this player from Hong Kong supported Hong Kong in post-game interview. Not only the player got punished, but also two broadcasters who were present in the situation, but did not say anything just were there- Blizzard stated that they aren't working with these broadcasters anymore while not stating anything they did wrong. Blizzard defended it's decision to punish the player stating that in rules there is mention that engaging in any act that offends a portion of a group or public will result in removal from Grandmasters. Of course this was met from backlash and many players of Blizzard games calling for boycot. Also there has been angriness within company as some employees have as sign of protest covered up boards stating company's values.

Many media commentators as politicians in USA have been vocal about happenings with these two companies, going as far as calling them agents of Chinese cencorship in USA.

South Park: "We good now China?"
'We good now China?' South Park creators issue mock apology after ban

In other side of field, South Park has also been met with backlash from China after airing episode "Band in China" in 2th October that criticized China's cencorship. This led South Park being banned not only from Chinese television, but China also cleaning up all the content related to South park from streaming sites and social media. Creators of South Park also issued apology over this, though there apology is bit different:

So I guess it's not any longer just Chinese (and Taiwanese, Hong Kong) idols that are shut up and made to say these disturbing things against democracy and freedom of speech, it has also spread to international companies and their employees. This scare tactic is quite strong, lot of companies have money tied in China and they are willing to go against values of their employees and even their company for that money. It is a scary world we are living when country across the oceans can interfere with your free speech and opinions.

That's true, however it's maybe more visible right now, cause it doesn't only matter what PR teams of companies say but also what people do on their own social media accounts. Ofc most companies try to be neutral or no comment about such things to not lose business, but now that means also silencing individuals.

I've always thought China as a country was made to fail, it's like the only spec of Communism left in the world... and it's not even actual Communism, it's what the countries leaders want it to be. And imagine being this petty about every single thing that criticizes you... and whats worse all of them were right to do so...

And seeing what Blizzard has done... as a future game developer.... I feel offended by such things being done... I really hope I never have to be under a company that supports only the things that bring in money... Yes I can imagine China is a large market for Blizzad but what's worse, all of your other players hating you? Or China being a bitch and banning your game only in China (maybe)

People's Republic China has definitely gone through some hard times, I actually did one course about it's history and it definitely wasn't pretty. Not only there is human rights problems, but they are responsible of famine that killed tens of millions in the country and it was pretty much cause Mao was being stupid af. They had to let go of socialistic economy to allow the country survive someway, but apparently the current leader is trying to move towards stricter rules once again.

Blizzard definitely went too far. I get that pro game broadcast wasn't most appropriate place to say political stuff, but they went way too far with their punishment for it. They fired two broadcasters who had nth to do with it, who actually tried to cover their faces, and outright stripped the guy from price he won with his playing as well as banned for a year which is lot for pro who does that for living.

I'm afraid China is getting more and more power and everyone who goes against their "One China" policy is meant to fail. You just need to take a look at Taiwan, they've been cornered to the point they just have relations with several South American countries, mine (Dominican Republic, is not on SA but it belongs to the same latin community) broke a long a very beneficial relationship with Taiwan to open an official channel with China, a new economic alliance.
I cannot blame my govt. though, they're corrupt but not stupid and China is the biggest market rn. For a little county like mine, having a good relationship with them means a lot.

Taiwan is rly bad position lately, losing lot of allies to China's money. There is concern that is China going to start moving towards Taiwan at some point, since it still does bully companies and countries to not recognize Taiwan as country. US Airlines recently dropped Taiwan from their flight list, and they were one of last airlines to do that almost everyone has done it already- instead they offer flight to Taipei (Taiwan's capitol). It's quite ugly.

Greed makes people do such crazy things.
This doesn't surprise me at all.

But as goyo said, it's definitely a concern and such disturbing events with those sports teams and gaming.
I never really liked blizzard up until many years ago.

Of course they would want more money. It's all they know now, seeing how big they are.

Another shitty thing is just that so many companies claim to be "woke" and socially aware so that they could get money from people who want to support morally concious companies. There is so many companies pinkwashing (claiming to be LGBT) etc. without showing it on their actions. Then they do things like this for the money and show their true colors :susPepe:

Yeah I agree. Being an ally in any situation in general and then back stabbing. It goes hand in hand with greed and selfishness.
Don't pretend to be a friend to me, then turn around and do something the exact opposite.

I'd rather see them not be an ally of LGBT at all then pretend to be.
Makes me want to punch them in the face. (betrayal has always been a massive pet peeve with me)
